As we wrap up addition strategies we are also reviewing how to use number lines and number grids to add numbers. We are noticing patterns in the tens and ones place. I encourage you to use the connected website along with Ixl. There are games such as, Name that number that we play in our classroom the kids would love to share at home. Please continue to send back homelnks the following day they are sent home. 10-14-2017 We are hard at work learning Addition Strategies! Please ask your 2nd grader about Making a ten, doubles facts and doubles plus 10. Reviewing facts both addition and subtraction is highly encouraged! Using IXL, abcya.com, aplusmath.com is very helpful with this as well as doing the math homelinks. occasionally you may find more challenge homework to come home in addition to the regular homelinks. 10-1-2017 We started math rotations on Friday and they went remarkably smooth! This is a great opportunity for me to differentiate instruction in small groups. we will be taking the unit 1 test on tuesday this week. homelinks have begun. please make sure these are returned the following day. 9-25-2017 We are wrapping up unit 1. Next we will be focusing on Fact Strategies. 9-16-2017 We have started Unit 1 where we will are establishing routines, exploring with math tools, working with number grids and practicing skip counting. |
Reading10-29-2017
It has only been such a short time and yet these 2nd graders have come so far! We are meeting in guided reading groups daily, learning how to appreciate narrative story structure, summarizing stories and asking questions. Ask your treasure about, "somebody, wanted, but, so, then." This is a helpful strategy to summarize fiction stories. Please keep reading Daily at home. reading bingos are due 10/30. 10-14-2017 In reading groups we are identifying consonant cluster words, long vowel words, contractions and plurals. We are also applying comprehension strategies such as questioning, and sequencing stories. We are reminding ourselves to think about what we are reading, while we are reading! 10-1-2017 Reading groups have started and we are hard at work building our decoding and comprehension strategies. Raz-kids info has gone home. Encourage your child to read 20 minutes a day! 9-25-2017 We have started reading stations this week! So exciting to see readers completing independent literacy activities while I meet with readers. We continue to discuss and apply reading strategies such as connecting. 9-16-2017 In Reader's Workshop we have begun talking about how readers think about what they're reading while they are reading. Our 2nd graders are beginning to respond to reading and connect with characters. In the upcoming week, we will discuss questioning as readers as well as making predictions. Please be sure to encourage your child to read 20 minutes daily. |
Writing10-29-2017
We continue to work on writing our small moments. we have published one and now are studying narrative mentor texts to learn from master writers. 10-14-2017 We are publishing small moment stories and perfecting our sentence writing. We continue to study mentor texts to study how master writers create bold beginnings. 10-1-2017 We have begun drafting our small moment stories. We are reading mentor texts as writers to learn how master writers make great small moment stories. 9-25-2017 This week we will work on selecting a topic and how to zoom in on a small moment of a personal narrative. 9-16-2017 We have launched Writer's Workshop in class! Our writers will create a "Heart Map" where they will begin adding topics to write about throughout the year. |
Science/Social Studies10-29-2017
In science, we are still exploring life cycles and will be collecting data on our own physical growth this year. it will be fun to see how much we have grown from now until spring. we are excited to be interviewing our grandparents! Even one using skype in london! 10-14-2017 This week we measured our tree and learned about tree rings. In our life cycle unit we will also be discussing generations. we would love a grandma or grandparent come and share what life was like for them years ago. 10-1-2017 We have started our Life cycle unit and this week we used our scientist eyes to observe "our tree". We will be studying all of the changes our tree goes through this year. 9-25-2017 In science we are beginning our life cycle unit. We will be discussing the stages of the life cycle of humans, frogs and sheep. In social studies we are learning about community and family. 9-16-2017 In Science, we have begun experimenting with the Scientific Method and the quickest way to melt an ice cube. We worked through each step and discussed what exactly is a scientist. In Social Studies, we are discussing classroom community and how to be the most professional 2nd grade self we can. |
